Linking and unlinking your Telegram account
Overview
MoorMesh uses Telegram to deliver private, real-time alert notifications directly to your phone. When your camera detects motion, the MoorMesh bot sends you a personal Telegram message containing the boat name, the type of event, and a one-tap Cancel — it was me! button. This allows you to dismiss a false alarm instantly, before your club or harbour is notified.
Linking your Telegram account takes under two minutes and requires only the free Telegram app. This article covers how to link your account for the first time, how to verify the link is working, how to re-link if the connection is lost, and how to unlink if you no longer wish to use Telegram notifications.
Before You Begin
You will need the Telegram app installed on the device where you want to receive alerts. Telegram is free and available on all major platforms:
Platform | Download |
|---|---|
iPhone / iPad | App Store — search "Telegram" |
Android | Google Play — search "Telegram" |
macOS | |
Windows | |
Web |
You must be signed in to MoorMesh before you can link your account.
How to Link Your Telegram Account
Step 1 — Open Notification Settings
Sign in to MoorMesh and click your name or avatar in the top-right corner of any page. Select Account Settings from the dropdown, then open the Notifications tab.
Alternatively, if you have not yet completed onboarding, the Telegram linking step appears as part of the onboarding wizard at /onboard.
Step 2 — Generate a Link Token
On the Notifications page, locate the Telegram section. If your account is not yet linked, you will see a Link Telegram Account button. Click it.
MoorMesh generates a unique, time-limited deep link. This link is valid for 15 minutes. If it expires before you complete the process, click the button again to generate a fresh one.
Step 3 — Open the Link in Telegram
Click the Open Telegram to Link Account button. This opens Telegram (in the app or in your browser) and navigates to a conversation with the MoorMesh bot (@Moormeshbot).
Important: You must use the same device or Telegram account where you want to receive alerts. If you open the link on your desktop but want alerts on your phone, open the link on your phone instead.
Step 4 — Start the Bot
In the Telegram conversation with the MoorMesh bot, tap the Start button at the bottom of the screen. This sends a /start command with your unique token to the bot.
The bot will reply with a confirmation message: "Your MoorMesh account has been linked successfully."
Step 5 — Confirm in MoorMesh
Return to the MoorMesh Notifications page. The page polls for confirmation every few seconds. Once the link is detected, the Telegram section updates to show a green Linked badge alongside your Telegram chat ID. No manual confirmation is needed.
Verifying the Link
After linking, you can send yourself a test notification to confirm everything is working correctly.
From the Notifications page, click Send Test Notification. MoorMesh will immediately send a test Telegram message to your linked account. The message will look identical to a real pre-alert, including a grace period countdown and an example cancel button (which is inactive for test messages).
If you do not receive the test message within 30 seconds, check the following:
Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
No message received | Confirm the bot conversation shows a "linked" reply from Step 4 |
Telegram notifications are silent | Check your phone's notification settings for Telegram |
Message received on wrong device | Re-link using the device where you want alerts |
Token expired error | Generate a new link token and repeat from Step 2 |
Re-linking After a Problem
If your Telegram account is unlinked unexpectedly (for example, after reinstalling Telegram or switching to a new phone), you can re-link at any time by repeating the linking steps above. The process is identical whether you are linking for the first time or re-linking.
Re-linking overwrites the previous Telegram chat ID on your account. If you are switching to a different Telegram account or a different phone number, simply complete the linking flow on the new account — the old link is automatically replaced.
Notification Preferences
Once Telegram is linked, two additional preferences become available on the Notifications page:
Email alerts. By default, MoorMesh sends pre-alert notifications via both Telegram and email. If you prefer Telegram-only notifications, you can disable email alerts from the Notifications page. Note that you cannot disable email alerts unless Telegram is linked — MoorMesh requires at least one active notification channel.
Grace period duration. The grace period is the window during which you can cancel a false alarm before your club is notified. The default is 60 seconds and can be adjusted between 30 and 120 seconds. See the related article False Alarm! Understanding the Alert Grace Period and Escalation Flow for full details.
How to Unlink Your Telegram Account
If you no longer wish to receive Telegram notifications, you can unlink your account from the Notifications page.
Navigate to Account Settings → Notifications, locate the Telegram section, and click Unlink Telegram. You will be asked to confirm. Once unlinked, the MoorMesh bot will no longer send you messages.
Important: If you unlink Telegram, MoorMesh will fall back to email-only notifications. Ensure your account email address is correct and that email alerts are enabled before unlinking. If both Telegram and email alerts are disabled, you will not receive any pre-alert notifications and will have no way to cancel false alarms before they escalate.
Unlinking does not remove the bot from your Telegram contacts. You can safely delete the conversation with @Moormeshbot in Telegram if you wish.
Frequently Asked Questions
I tapped Start in Telegram but MoorMesh still shows "Not linked".
Ensure you tapped Start in the correct bot conversation (@Moormeshbot) and that the deep link you opened was generated within the last 15 minutes. If the token has expired, return to MoorMesh and generate a new link.
I receive Telegram alerts but the Cancel button does not work.
The cancel button in the Telegram message is a link that opens MoorMesh in your browser. Ensure you are signed in to MoorMesh on the device where you tap the link. If you are signed in on a different account, the cancellation will fail.
Can I link the same Telegram account to multiple MoorMesh accounts?
No. A Telegram chat ID can only be linked to one MoorMesh account at a time. If you manage boats under multiple accounts, each account must use a different Telegram account.
I switched phones. Do I need to re-link?
If your Telegram account (phone number) is the same, your existing link will continue to work on the new phone — Telegram accounts are tied to phone numbers, not devices. If you changed your Telegram phone number, you will need to re-link.
Can I receive alerts on both my phone and my desktop?
Yes. Telegram delivers messages to all devices where you are signed in with the same account. You do not need to do anything extra — link once and alerts will appear on every device running your Telegram account.
